New York Minute

April 27, 2011

With moving and a trip to NYC all within a week and a half, things get pretty busy! I wish I could say I am happy to be done moving stuff but I know that I have only survived round one. Round two will happen before I know it but hopefully it won’t be to bad. I think the fact that we are moving to New York City (ahh!!) will overshadow any moving stress.
So last week the hubs and I went to NYC to figure out our living situation, check out FIT, interview for jobs and such. It was an amazing, jam packed few days. We stayed with our family in Harrison, NY which is about 30 minutes outside the city. Such a cute town. Even though our trip was short, it was nice to spend time with our NY relatives. Especially since we don’t get to see them that often. It will be fun living by them and spending more time with them.
The first few days we felt hopeless with finding an apartment. Rent is expensive in NYC, that’s no secret. But that’s not even the hard part. It’s the moving in part that is hard. After broker fees, and your deposit, etc. I would say on average you will have to put down $8,000 plus to move in somewhere in the city. Big reality check. However, we moved forward in faith and Heavenly Father has had everything fall into place for us so that we can get an apartment for ourselves. It is amazing to see his hand work in our life and help us with this move to NYC. Prayers are heard. I can testify to that.
We will be living in the city in a neighborhood called Chelsea. I have always loved Chelsea for as long as I can remember. It has a nice neighborhood feeling to it even though you are in the middle of a big city. The biggest reason Chelsea is our choice neighborhood is because FIT is in Chelsea and with all that I will have to carry to school I do not want a big commute. Did I mention Kleinfelds is in Chelsea too? 😉
FIT was next on our list. Unfortunately they were on spring break when we were there so we didn’t get to see much of the school but it was still amazing to walk up to your dream school and know that you made it in. I got so excited just being there. I am really looking forward to going to school there. It will be amazing.
Then came a huge high light of the trip. My interview! Let me start off by saying Kleinfelds is even more beautiful in person. It looks great on T.V. but it is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous stores I have ever been in. I can see why brides want to be a Kleinfeld bride. It is an amazing experience from start to finish.
The V.P. of the company interviewed me and was so sweet. My interview ran about an hour and I got to see the whole store. By the way, Kleinfelds now has a men’s suiting department, I recommend all men to get suits there. They can custom your suits to have the lining you want inside. No detail left out. James needs new suits, even though we are already married I may make him go there.
Anyways, the interview went very well. The only downside to it was them being worried about my schedule. They did say at the end of the interview to call them when I get to NYC and we will figure something out. They also wanted me to come back the next day to meet the owner but our plane left the next day so I couldn’t, bummer. But I thought that was a good sign that they wanted me to meet him. So we shall see. Keep your fingers crossed! It would be a dream job.
This cute guy also looked at some jobs for web design. He will have to go back one more time before we move to secure a job. I love that he does web design because he can move any where. And NYC will be just as good for him as it is for me. He will grow so much there in his career and I am excited for him. He is amazing. I love how supportive he is of me and my dreams. He brings out the best in me and encourages me to go after everything I dream of. I love him for that. It’s amazing going through life with your very best friend by your side. Marrying him was the best thing I ever did and will do.
We ended our trip at our church temple. It was the perfect ending to our trip. It was nice to escape the sounds of the city and be in the most peaceful place on earth. We were over joyed to be there together to pray about all we had experienced that week. We loved it.
NYC we love you and look forward to calling you home. I have been dreaming of this moment since I was a little girl, just ask my mother. I have been obsessed with NYC for as long as I can remember. Now everything in my life is lined up for me to move there. I can’t believe my life is so good. Thank you Heavenly Father. NYC here we come!

Ah, I needed this post today. I’m typing to you from the corner Starbucks across from McPherson Square in DC. I’m so glad to be here. I remember when I got off the train with my suitcase and Metro card, I just started crying. Profusely. In the middle of Union Station. I still look around sometimes and can’t believe I’m here, in the city where I’ve always wanted to work, working in policy and government. It’s incredible. I am so grateful every day for God bringing me here.

I know this post is really old, but it is so great to get to read about your experiences when moving to NYC. It’s nice to read it now, knowing that you are settled in so well and loving life.
