Well I have some very exciting news to report. I have sold my very first Taylor Morgan wedding gown!! To answer some of your questions, no they are not out in stores yet and no I cannot show them yet (soon though!); this may leave you wondering how I even sold my first gown already then? Here’s how it went down….
As most of you know, I work two days a week in a bridal store here in Austin called “Serendipity Bridal.” It is really nice for me to be there to see what brides are wanting and not wanting these days. A few weeks ago a girl came into our store and heard all about my dresses, she already bought a dress but told her friend Amanda about me. Amanda’s mother called me a few weeks later to talk about my dresses and her daughter and what she was looking for. Her mother was so sweet and I was already looking forward to meeting them.
Last week when I was in Los Angeles working on my patterns I spoke to Amanda and set up a time for her to come down to Austin. She lives about three hours from Austin so I was very honored that they were making the trip down to come see them. Now seeing how the samples for Serendipity are not done yet, I told Amanda she would be trying on the mock-ups and I would show her the sketches and fabric swatches along with them.
Yesterday, Amanda, her mother and little sister Faith all came into Serendipity to meet with me. It was so much fun putting my dresses on a beautiful (and stylish!) girl and seeing what she thought of them. I am happy to report that she bought the very first dress she tried on of mine! It was a very surreal feeling to hear them say, “so do you measure me for it now?” meaning “I would like to buy it, what do we do next?” I thought they might just try them on and think about it but I was thrilled to hear them say that this was “the one.”
I have been dreaming of this moment for a very long time and thought I would cry instantly when it happened. I didn’t cry. I think I was in shock that it happened so easily, especially considering that she is buying it after only trying the mock-up on. However, once I called my husband James in front of them to break the news I was defiantly emotional. It’s amazing to share with my husband this success, because even though I am the designer, this has been a family journey from day one. My husband being the cute guy that he is was SO excited. He asked “can I put it on facebook now or do you want to be the first one to?!” haha I let him put it up first because that was just to cute of a question. To make him even more excited, Amanda bought James’ favorite dress in the collection.
I of course love the dress Amanda picked out. This dress in particular holds a very special place in my heart for several reasons. This was the first dress to ever be designed for the collection which means that it set the tone for the entire collection. It’s my husband’s favorite. It is very different than anything you have ever seen! Of all of the five dresses in the collection this has by FAR had the most work go into it. To give you an idea, the other 4 dresses have between 6-12 pattern pieces per dress, this one has a big FORTY TWO pieces to it! That is A LOT! I originally sketched this dress as an option for my own wedding dress. And last but not least I named it after my first bride ever, Amanda.
When one of the store owners of Serendipity was ringing up Amanda’s dress she asked me what the dress was called. Up until now all the dresses are called 1,2,3,4,5 until I decide on their names but I instantly knew I wanted to name “dress one” Amanda.
April 10, 2010 will go down in Taylor Morgan history as the day we sold our first dress to Amanda. I am so happy that Taylor Morgan has sold it’s first dress but I am even more happy that I was the one to sell the very first one. If it had sold in stores first another consultant could have made Taylor Morgan’s first sale; but it is even more special to me to know and have worked with the bride personally.
Here is a picture of me with Amanda and her family:
Such a wonderful experience. Once the dress is done James and I are going to go up to Dallas to see it on Amanda and take pictures. I will keep you posted. Congratulations Amanda! Taylor Morgan is so honored to have you as our “first bride!”
Much love everyone!
